Windows XP Tip: Desktop Icon Titles Are Too Narrow

Q: In my Windows XP-based system, the desktop icons have text labels underneath them that are way too narrow — narrower even than the icons. Even worse, if the text wraps, which it does after four characters, then it is clipped after the first character and filled with an ellipsis (for example, "A…"). So the labels are basically useless. The desktop display Properties dialog allows me to change the size of the icon or the text font size (currently set to 32 for icon size and 9 pt. Arial for the text), but it does not allow for widening the text box. At work, where I also use XP, the text boxes are much wider than the icons. Would a high screen resolution have something to do with it?

A: The width of the icon label is controlled by the default horizontal icon spacing (even if you manually place the icons farther apart). To change that spacing in XP:

  1. Right-click a blank space on the desktop and choose Properties.

  2. Click the Appearance tab.

  3. Click the Advanced button.

  4. Select Icon Spacing (Horizontal) in the Items list.

  5. Increase the spacing-try setting it to 43.

  6. Click OK, OK.

  7. Right-click the desktop.

  8. Choose Arrange Icons By and pick an order (this will cause them to relocate based on the new spacing)

In Windows Vista, you would right-click the desktop and choose Personalize, click Window Color and Appearance, and click Open classic appearance properties for more color options. Now you can follow the instructions above starting at step 3. But I found that I couldn't’t actually re-create the problem in Vista.

Mac OS X Tip: Close Multiple Application Windows At Once

If you hold down your Option key when you click on the close box of an Application Window, it will close all the open windows associated with that window at once (i.e. multiple Finder windows)
