How to Use Google Gmail as your Primary E-Mail Client

UPDATED: January 5, 2012

Using Google's Gmail For Online E-Mail Storage to send / receive e-mails from your domain

Google offers a massive amount of online storage space, 7 gigs as of this writing. With this simple set-up, you can take advantage of this and still send and receive your e-mails as if they are coming from your personal domain, which looks both more professional and lets everyone who sees your e-mail know what your domain is.

Steps to Make Gmail Act as Your POP E-mail Client Software

  1. You need a Google account and an e-mail account on your own domain.

  2. Within the Google web interface, go to your account
(by clicking on the "Show Me to My Account" button).
  3. Chose "Account Settings" (in the upper right click on your name).
    Choose "Gmail accounts".
  4. Go to Accounts and Imports.
  5. Choose "Send mail from another address" and put in the e-mail account you would like to use from your own domain
    your email goes here
  6. Choose send Mail as and put in your name and your e-mail and click on next step.
  7. Choose send e-mail through Gmail and then send a verification. If you have not already set up this e-mail to check on your computer, you can check it via a web browser. Once this e-mail arrives (which easily could take several minutes) put the verification code into the Google page.

Once the account has been verified you can set the account on your name as the default account so all e-mail sent from the Gmail account will appear to come from the account on your domain.
  8. Choose "Check mail using POP3:" by clicking on the button "Get POP3 e-mail account".
  9. User name is youremail@yourdomain.com (substitute youremail and be sure to add your correct domain), password is the password to the e-mail on your domain (NOT your Google password and POP server is yourdomain.com (substitute yourdomain with your actual domain name and be sure to not include mail in front of it).

The remainder of the settings can be changed later. However, we recommend that you:
    • Leave a copy of messages on server should remain unchecked.
    • Always use a secure connection (SSL) should remain unchecked.
    • Label incoming messages is a good idea if you are giving out this Gmail address or checking multiple addresses from this address. Otherwise leave it unchecked.

  10. Your Gmail will automatically retrieve messages from your main e-mail account on the Bower Web Solutions Server. You can check, send and receive e-mails using the Gmail web based interface. However, to work offline, back up your e-mails on your own computer:

Optional, but recommended: Set up your e-mail client like Microsoft Outlook or Mac Mail to check this account on a home or work computer. Bower Web Solutions recommends you use POP to download messages from Google's servers.
See http://mail.google.com/support/bin/topic.py?hl=en&topic=12805 for instructions on setting up Gmail for your e-mail client.
  11. If you have previously configured your e-mail client to check your e-mail at your domain (i.e. youremail@yourdomain.com) be sure to delete that account from your e-mail client.
  12. Congratulations! You can now check and send e-mail on your domain by logging into your Gmail account.
