Mountain Lion 10.8 Mail.app – Why are my RSS Feeds Missing?

Apple MailI have recently updated to the latest Apple Operating System Mountain Lion (10.8) and for the most part, I have had no issues. Today however I did find something is missing, as more and more Mountain Lion users are discovering as well.

I clicked on an RSS link to add that RSS feed to my Mac Mail.app only to have it not work. Not only that, I see that my previously added feeds were also missing. Apparently Apple discontinued (and rather quietly, I might add) the RSS features in both Safari 6.0 and Mac Mail, so those previous feeds no longer work with those applications.

You can still use a third party RSS reader on your Mac. But how do you add all those lost RSS URLs to your new RSS Reader application you ask? Read on.

How to Find Missing Mail.app RSS feeds

  1. Open the Terminal Application
    (located in /Applications/Utilities/Terinmal.app)
  2. Copy And Paste into the Terminal app the following:
    cd ~/Library/Mail/V2/RSS/
  3. Then copy and Paste Into Terminal:
    find . -name “Info.plist” -exec grep -A 1 Feed {} \; | grep string | sed ‘s/^[^>]*>//’ | sed ‘s/]*>$//’
  4. Your RSS feeds should now appear in a list within the Terminal window.

Now all you have to do is copy and paste those RSS feeds directly into your new RSS application.
